Saturdays at IISc

For those of you who have not been to IISc,first thing is you have to be there.IISc or The Indian Institute of Science is the one of the premier research institutes which produces more research papers than any other institution in India. It has a huge campus with sprawling trees and greenery everywhere.
Every saturday at 10 pm (yes you read it right!), the reading glasses come off and the master of sciences and phd's come out of their labs to lose themselves(or find themselves?) in a combination of music and knowledge.
We are a group of 20 or so enthusiastic Yes+ graduates mostly from  IISc(not me!). We start the satsang  in an open area under the night sky with slight hint of moonlight. The cool breeze and the rustling of leaves under the silvery moonlight sets the stage. We generally start at 10 pm and this is what makes it special. We even have a name for it. "Midnight Satsang." It all started quite accidently about 2 years ago but  was revived about two months ago after a big gap.It will require a different post to do justice to the early days so will write about that later.

It has been going on for about 2 months now. And it is a great combination of music, meditation and knowledge. Singing under the moonlight surrounded by greenery everywhere has a flavour of its own.
We start with singing some devotional tunes(the usual fantastic satsang songs) and depending on the mood I like to give a taste of some nice hindi melodies or some soothing english numbers. When the mood is electric, we play exciting games(you have to be here to find out which ones). And I have introduced some innovative games of my own which worked fantastic.
Ram and Kapil are special invitees most of the time. Ram thrills us with his guitar acumen and Kapil with his enigmatic silence. We also have a brilliant tabla player 'Aman' who has as of yet not done the course but was so impressed with our singing the other week that he decided to join us.He amazing and quickly learnt to flow with the  flow of Satsang.

In short the weekly IISc satsang is something we look forward to every weekday. It is like a rest after a week's work and to lose ourselves in the music, the silence, and the knowledge.

If you live in bangalore or happen to be here don't miss out on coming to IISc on Saturday eve's.

A moment's indulgence.- Rabindranath Tagore

A poem by the saint poet Rabindranath Tagore.

I ask for a moment's indulgence to sit by thy side.
The works that I have in hand I will finish afterwards.
Away from the sight of thy face my heart knows no rest nor respite, and my work becomes an endless toil in a shoreless sea of toil.

Today the summer has come at my window with its sighs and murmurs; and the bees are plying their minstrelsy at the court of the flowering grove.

Now it is time to sit quite, face to face with thee, and to sing dedication of life in this silent and overflowing leisure.

How to earn money from your blog?

This post is inspired by one of our reader's comments.(Abhishek)
Abhishek is a full time YES+ teacher and is currently taking courses in Arunachal Pradesh. You can read all of his inspiring and interesting stories here.

If you own a blog, and you love blogging(that means you post regularly) then why not make some money out of it too.In this post I will be highlighting some of the many ways as to how you can earn from your blog.
First things first, you must have a paypal account. Its free to open an account. Go to paypal.com and create a free account. You have the option of linking your credit card and bank account to your paypal account but its not compulsory. You can very well send and receive money through paypal even if it's not linked with a credit card.

Now I will not be focussing so much on the big players. Big players here refers to people who have been blogging for a considerable amount of time(above an year) and have considerable content and considerable (>500 ) pageviews per day.Instead this post is for new bloggers who have set up a new blog and want to get started to earn from it.

1.Earn through ads
The first step in order to monetize your blog must be to sign up with a few ad networks, so that you can earn by running their ads on your blog. Now, the first name which comes is Google Adsense.Since Blogger is owned by Google, Adsense ads are an inherent part of the template though you may remove it. But in order to earn through adsense, you must explicitly create an adsense account. Go to adsense.google.com and create an account.

THE PROBLEM WITH ADSENSE

Thouh adsense is one of the most popular and effective way to earn through ads , it is very unlikely that a new blog will be accepted by adsense. According to the rules only top domains are accepted i.e. www.example.com . Though google has also accepted some blogger blogs with considerable pageviews.
So if you have less than 30 post and the blog is younger than 6 months its highly unlikely that your blog will be accepted by adsense.
And adsense also has a very strict rules about click fraud . so if your blog is accepted make sure no one clicks on the ads from your computer.Your account may be cancelled. This goes for other ad networks as well.
So if not Adsense then what?
Don't lose heart, there are a number of other ad networks which accept almost any kind of blog.So that even a new blog can start earning.
I have already written a post on this on my MMO blog, so I will not repeat it here.
Visit HERE to know about Alternatives to adsense

2. Paid Reviews

If you have a considerable amount of pageviews, then you can get paid for writing reviews of certain website of product. The pay amount usually starts from $5 per post. One of the popular networks offering paid reviews is Pay Per Post. Again , not all blogs are accepted. You can still give it a shot.

3.Paid To Search

Well this is not necessarily related to blogging, but if you are a regular blogger then you need to make a considerable amount of searches(for topics, images etc) . So why not get paid to search.
Yes! You get paid for every search that you make. There are many sites for this .Scour started with its own search engine where you can claim points for a gift card.
However, the most popular search engines are GOOGLE and YAHOO!
So won't it be great if you are paid just to search regularly.
HOMEPAGES FRIENDS is one such legitimate network where you get paid for every search. It uses YAHOO search engine.
Caution:If you hate the very sight of ads then you must stop reading right NOW.

In homepages friends, you make an account with them and do regular searching. The minimum payout is $40.
It also has a brilliant referral system where you can earn for searches your referrals make.Isn't that great?

TO CHECK OUT MORE ABOUT HOMEPAGES FRIENDS: CLICK HERE

There are a number of other ways to make money online which if discussed will make this post too long , so I will keep that for further posts.
REaders Note: I am really not sure how many of you would want to read more such posts about ONline Money Making in this blog?? So leave a comment as to how often I should write posts like this?

Adventure sports in Sikkim.

I had given a brief introduction about Sikkim in my first post. Sikkim joined Indian republic as the 22nd full fledged state in 1975. And since then it has grown in leaps and bounds turning from a almost unheard tribal kingdom to a state were tradition, nature and modernity comes face to face to present a highly marked tourist destination.
One of the particular attraction which Sikkim has is that of Adventure Sports. If you are an adventure buff then the adrenaline rush during river rafting and the soft touch of nature during trekking in the high himalayas can mean a different world to you.
I pesonally have not experienced much of adventure sports in Sikkim but by the reactions of those who have , it's definitely on top of the list for adventure buffs specially in India. But it reminds me of the Advanced course in Rishikesh in Feb 2007 where we had also done river rafting. It will require an altogether different post to list the adventures we had in rishikesh.

From the numerous avenues available to experience adventure sports, some are prominent and are listed here:

White River Rafting

White water rafting is a later entrant of adventure sport in Sikkim. Only the Teesta and Rangit rivers offer long stretches which are ideal for safe rafting. Teesta has been graded on the International scale at Grade 4. The icy cold waters of the rugged Teesta have a series of rapids with varying intensity and character. It offers one of the finest rafting stretches in the world. Rangit, a tributary of the Teesta, has more difficlult stretches.
On both the rivers, the riverbanks have deep forests, with some patches of terraced cultivation, and small villages. Plenty of white sandy beaches exist, offering good campsites. Rapids of classification 2 to 4 are interspersed with placid floats, making rafting an enjoyable experience. Facilities for overnight River beach camping is available. Beginners as well as experienced adventurers can seek the assistance of the Department of Tourism and travel agents for arranging river rafting trips .

Paragliding

Jorethang, in west Sikkim, and certain parts of north Sikkim are popular locales for paragliding.

Mountain Biking

I had visited some of the real gem places of Sikkim and I feel that it can give a serious competition to the most beautiful valleys in the world.Even I did not know that places that beautiful existed.
One particular place stands out from the rest and is called 'YUMTHANG' (or the valley of flowers). It is exactly a valley of flowers. If visited during spring, the entire roadway of aroun 20 kms to yumthang is covered with flowers. And it's literal here, the road is covered with flowers. You have to visit there to believe me!!!

Sikkim’s best adventure product is mountain biking. The rugged and dramatic terrain of Sikkim Himalayas offers sure and exciting biking trails to the adventure lovers. The beauty of the countryside, flora and fauna and lifestyle of the Sikkimise people is best experienced on a bike’s seat as you meander through lush green hills and dales. This is new sport that Sikkim boasts of and many have lured by the exiting thrills of this out door fun. There is no specific season for mountain biking. Many have enjoyed riding there bikes during monsoon in slushy dirt road.

Trekking

Trekking peaks in Sikkim

Sikkim has to offer a number of fascinating trekking routes to enterprising trek enthusiasts. The best time to trek in these parts of the Eastern Himalayas is between mid- February to May and again from October to December. The treks pass by beautiful gompas, simple but colourful hamlets and through so fascinating alpine forests full of a rich variety of flora and fauna. Yuksom is an ideal take-off point for trekking. This point is invariably used as a centre of climbing and trekking expeditions by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling. The trek to Bakhim is an unforgettable B experience. Dzongri at an altitude of 3,962 metres, offers the visitor an excellent and unobstructed view of the Khangchendzonga Massif. It also provides a trekker with superb views of sunrise and sunset.

Mountain Climbing
If you are willing to go to the extremes then mountain climbing is for you.But you have to have certain level of physical fitness to get permit to do it.

So next time you plan your adventure sports, it would definitely be the home of the highest mountain in India.

The greatest batsman ever?

 "The god of Cricket"

Just read in the paper about Sachin Tendulkar's record of being the highest run getter in ODI and TEst.
Just felt nice. Growing up all these years seeing him play and to know that he is still around makes me sort of nostalgic and brings back memories of my childhood when all the kids and grown ups alike used to cheer for him.
I simply love the guy. His simplicity and humility sets him apart.

The recent years have not been very kind on him but the way he fought it and came out to prove his audacity is really amazing.
After all it's not everytime that a man is able to score 28,388 runs!!

A series of series.

What do you do when you don't have a cable TV connection?? Watch movies!!
What do you do when you run out of good movies to watch??
Watch TV series.

Well , yes. We all have been addicted to one series or the other. Some made us cry, some inspired us, some just stirred the sweet romantic emotions and others just got us hooked for endless hours giggling and laughing.

The first series which I remember watching was.....yes, you guessed it right. FRIENDS!

It is such a normal series but still got millions of people hooked on to it. I still remember how we used to watch friends during my 1st year in the hostel, that too just before exams. wow, those were the days.
I must confess that I just love FRIENDS.Whenever I feel a bit low and have nothing to watch, I get out one of the old dvd of FRIENDS. It brings back all the happy memories and makes me feel lighter instantly.
My favorite friends character is JOEY! Simply love his happy-go-lucky attitude.PHOEBE is also cool. Who's your favorite??

Well guys(i refer to males here), some action now!

I've been watching HEROES seriously for some time now and I'm up to date with the episodes. I think it has reached season 3 episode 4. Ya?
If you are to still to watch it, just do it. It's cool with all the powers and special effects.

LOST. I really got lost into it. It's a decent series, a refreshing story of a few survivors of an airplane crash who end up in a undiscovered island. Things go as predicted and nice until they discover that there are 'OTHERS' in the island. But it's hell long.
I just finished season 4 episode 14. each season has about 23 episodes.

Just starting today PRISON BREAK. Haven't watched it yet but my friends who have tell me that it's cool . Have you watched it? How's it??

I know there are other cool series too, let me know about the other cool ones , specially in the science-fiction genre!

BUT no HINDI soaps please!!!

I knew this was coming!!

Well I've recently been reading a lot of posts in my friends blogs about a post called 'TAGGED' and I knew this was coming.
Thanks Bhawana for tagging me.

The rules are:

RULE #1 People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.
RULE #2 Tag 6 people to do this quiz and those who are tagged cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by and cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by continue this game by sending it to other people.

So a good boy that I am, will get on with it.

1. If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be?
# immediately : heartbroken

   after a week : hmmmm....
  after a month  : 'I'm busy'

2. If you can have a dream come true, what would it be?
# Peace, happiness and celebration for the whole world.

3. Whose butt would you like to kick??. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time??

It would still be in the mirror.

4. What would you do with a billion dollars?
# Invest,spend and donate with 60-30-10 %(Bawa's formula).

5. Will you fall in love with your best friend?
# Definitely, if my best friend happens to be a girl.

6.Which is more blessed: loving someone or being loved by someone?
# Loving someone is more blessed. Because when you do that sincerely, the second comes as a byproduct automatically .(e.g. Guruji)

7. How long do you intend to wait for someone you love?
#
Till I don't forget waiting.( Longing is the quality of the fortunate.)

8. If the person you secretly like is attached, what will you do?

Now the people I tag:

Rashmin Bhaiya

Jeet

Abhishek

Pankaj

Aparna

Sunand

Funny flowers!

Had to share this with you!

Mathematician gets poetical!

What happens when a mathematician falls in love.Well he writes a poem!
I fear that i will be
a lonely number like root three
a three is all that is good and right
why must my three keep out of sight
beneath a vicious square root sign?
i wish instead i were a nine
for nine could thwart this evil trick
with just some quick arithmetic
i know i'll never see the sun
as 1.7321
such is my reality, a sad irrationality
when, hark, just what is this i see?
another square root of a three
has quietly come waltzing by
together now we multiply
and form a number we prefer
rejoicing as an integer
we break free from our mortal bonds
and with a wave of magic wands
our square root signs become unglued
and love for me has been renewed!!

Bihar flood relief: A review

After more than a month since the waters of Kosi flodded Bihar, we could see help pouring in from all corners of the country and abroad. The Art of Living foundation was one of the first organizations to contribute.
Art of Living volunteers have been working very hard in Bihar to provide relief materials to the affected which have been collected from different parts of the country.

It is overwhelming to see how a man(??) heading the world's largest NGO has time to reach every area across the globe where service and love is needed. HATS OFF!!

Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, on September 25, visited different relief camps in the flood-affected areas of Purnia and Madhepura in Bihar to bring solace to the survivors and take stock of the relief operations undertaken by the Art of Living.
Sri Sri walked in knee-deep water for 3 km from Jankinagar in the Purnia district to Murliganj in the Madhepura district to interact with the victims. Sri Sri, who arrived in Purnia in the morning, counselled the victims taking shelter in the Jankinagar Phulwari camp, where the Art of Living is taking care of nearly 5,000 people.
Later addressing a large gathering of 10,000 people from nearly 50 surrounding villages, Sri Sri advised them to maintain a positive outlook towards life despite the devastation. "Under these trying circumstances, make the best use of your stay in the camps. As it’s going to take some more time for the waters to recede and the rehabilitation process to materialise, utilise the time here to learn new skills," he said. He announced that the Art of Living would provide vocational training to women in the camps. It has already started training in tailoring skills at the Jankinagar camp. Sri Sri also said the Art of Living would start a campaign to teach reading and writing to illiterate people staying in the camps.
He extracted a commitment from the people not to practice female foeticide and to stop harassment of women. He announced that the youth of the area would be trained under the Art of Living’s Youth Leadership Training Programme so that they can shoulder the responsibility of rehabilitation in the area. Urging the people not to lose heart, Sri Sri cited the example of Nagapattinam, which was completely devastated by the tsunami in 2004, and now has been completely rebuilt. "See this devastation as the foundation of a new rebuilding," he said.
Many of the victims shared that they were feeling relieved after attending the trauma relief sessions offered by the Art of Living. Sri Sri also lauded the good work done by the Art of Living volunteers, particularly the doctors, who have come from different parts of India and abroad. Earlier in the morning, the District Magistrate of Purnia, C Sridhar received Sri Sri on his arrival.
The Art of Living has been carrying out a multi-pronged relief operation in the flood-affected areas of Bihar on a war footing. The Bangalore-headquartered NGO has already mobilised and dispatched relief materials worth more than Rs 100 million (US$2.2 million) to Bihar. It proposes to raise another Rs 400 million (US$8.7 million) for the rehabilitation of the victims.

The most viewed video on Youtube!

P.S.This post is reposted from the archive of my other blog Tech-a-tete.

Lakhs and lakhs of videos are uploaded to youtube everyday.Ever wondered which is the most viewed video??

Well, I had thought that the most viewed video would be something to do with cokeandmenthol or George Bush perhaps, but no, the most popular video of all timeon YouTube, so far, has been Evolution of Danceby comedian Judson Laipply. It was added to YouTube on April 06, 2006
and has since gone on to attract 100,623,813 Million views.
It has 389,948 ratings.
It's had 216,032 comments, the first of which was: "That was freaking AWESOME! Thanks
for sharing!!".

According to a SMH article
at the end of 2006, Laipply is a comedian and motivational speaker from
Cleveland, Ohio. The video shows him dancing a six-minute routine
encompassing 32 songs spanning more than 50 years of music and dance.
In many ways this is your typical YouTube video - a funny, goofy, short
and clever video, in this case uploaded by and starring a
professional comedian. But there are tens of thousands of similar
videos on YouTube, uploaded by enthusiastic amateurs (mostly teens).

Incidentally, on Laipply's website there is an accompanying cat video - proving once and for all that this success story was by and for the Web.

Well I was thinking of hosting some sort of competition to give away free Entrecard Credits.Entrecard is a great service for smaller blogs. You get ad space which increases your visitors plus you get to know all the cool blogs out there.

The idea of doing this contest came from Uber Afilliate. It has a similar contest where the post has a freaking 1067 comments and where one comment is longer than my entire blog posts put together!

A fresh new look!

Phew! Its almost 5 am. Working on the new template for the past 7 hours.
So how is the new look?? One thing is certain, it's fresh!!
and also lot of things here are completely customized.
A few reasons made me change my older template to this one.A major reason being that I favour a 3 column template more than others simply because it can pack so much and make navigation so much easier for the readers.
Now the best part of the new template is the header which I created from scratch using photoshop. How's the vishalakshi mantap background?
Pretty huh?
The basic theme is called Maggo from Themelib. It took me some doing to convert this business template to a happy fresh look of a blog.

See the original template here.

This is the most I have spend in a template(I mean time). All the images here had to be hosted, the text fonts and colour had to be manipulated.Size of the header etc redone. So basically a lot of work for a day.
But still a lot is still to be done. I plan to change the basic blue body to light green which will blend with the header(again a lot of job in photoshop).
But enough for a day. Will catch some sleep before heading for Ashram!!!

Let the comments keep coming. If something is not working or doesn't look good please inform me.

Seriously funny.

Alelele dekho, Bilkul apne papa pe gaya hai. Wahi aankhen, wahi chehra........

The real magic of Photoshop!

I feel that in my previous post I have not done enough justice in praising the power which photoshop yields. So let me shut up and let the video do the talking....

The magic of Photoshop!

Ever since I saw a few things which could be done with Photoshop I have been fascinated with it.You could do almost seemingly impossible things with it. Attach someone's head to yours, change your hair colour, remove all scars and blemishes from your face, reduce weight, lose fat from areas where you want a toned up look etc. etc.

I agree that's its not a child's play to understand all the tech jargon there and apply it but surely a little knowledge of Photoshop can go a long way in the way we handle our photos and images.Specially for people who write regular blogs and are net savvy , posting and publishing text along with images , a little touch of Photoshop magic can do wonders.

This post is inspired by a very popular article which I got while in Digg : You can check out the article here:

Now time to show off. here are a few things which I did:

Photo within a photo:

Vishalakshi Mantap before and after

And see how I made Guruji soak in the Rain.

After
Are you impressed?

P.S. There are a couple of things I have put up in the sidebar. One is the wowzio tag cloud(the animated Blogumus was totally disfunctional as thankfully pointed out by Anand) and the other(i feel it's really catchy) is the recent posts widget which automatically parses and displays the image in the post. If there's no image, dearest guruji is always there.
So how do you like it?? Hm?

How we did not pay!!

As soon as we did it , I knew that it would make a very interesting narrative.
It was about 3 am on my birthday and it so happened that Devang Bhaiya was  with us so he suggested we go to Cafe Coffee Day at that time. Now the only joint open at that time was in R.T.Nagar so we went there.
There were 7 of us.Ram,Kapil,Bajaj,Vinod,Pankaj,Devang Bhaiya and me.
We took some drinks, chocolate e.t.c. No one was in a mood to eat anything so we just thought of drinking something as we were there.
Devang Bhaiya ordered a cold chocolate,I favored 1 cappucino and the rest ordered theirs.

Now the story starts here...
The fun began when the waiter served everything to everyone except Devang Bhaiya's cold coffee,so it began to show on his face.
Now the coffee arrived, though a bit late and we were more than ready to forgive, but the real trouble started when the bill which we got included Chicken Tikka and Chicken sandwich. It was not at all palatable to us considering the fact that there were 3 AOL teachers and rest hardcore volunteers. So as Devang Bhaiya put it " Isne galat jagah pe haat mara hai".

We told him to change the bill and give us our real bill which they promptly did. But now Devang Bhaiya was pissed off enough to not get them away so lightly. He calculated everything in his mind along with the taxes and it came out 384 but the bill said 394 so again the bill had to be changed which they shamelessly did.

Now the real real fun begins here...

After so much hassel, they still could not provide the original bill saying that the printer is not working .Now Devang Bhaiya got really fired up and with full awareness started to work things out(read: give them trouble). The biller (or whatever you call his position) came and started to counter argue. His statement basically said "We are so much busy and mistakes happen and we are not God!"

Devang Bhaiya gave a debit card to pay the bill. The waiter took the card only to return saying that they are not accepting cards because the card machine is not working. That was the last straw to Break the Camel's Back.

I promtly showed them the back of the menu which said "All major credit cards accepted".Devang Bhaiya said "We only have card, we don't have cash, how could we have known that your machine is not working, We are also not God!"

The manager was pissed off enough to do anything to see our backs. He politely said "OK sir,You need not pay! here is your bill".

 Devang Bhaiya
In this way we ate(drank),did not pay, and came out with a bill.
All perfectly legal .We would not have stretched so much but as Devang Bhaiya said :"Usne galat aadmi ke sath galat jagah pe haat mara!!!"
